video to express the basic parts of photosynthesis and it'simportance. My goal was to create an educational video that would explain the basics of the light and dark reactions to someone who is looking to find the out the basis of photosynthesis. I used song, diagrams and pictures to convey the different processes involved as well as how photosynthesis affects other things such as the survival of other living organisms. Hopefully my "rap" is entertaining enough to keep the viewer interested on the topic"

Lyrics:
“Photosynthesis”

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast, learning about it is a real blast! The two stages are light and dark, and its way cooler than swimming with a shark.

First chlorophyll absorbs light photons in the photosystem II of the thylakoids. The chlorophyll molecules gets excited its energy is transferred through the delighted pigment molecules to the reactor center complex. Then from there without a care the special chlorophyll a molecules give electrons to the primary acceptor through a redox reaction and becomes reduced—that’s a fact

H20 split into 2 electrons 2 hydrogen’s and one 02 2 electrons to electron transport chain 02 into our mouths and brains electron transport chain like a choo choo train through pq through pc through cytochrome complex can’t you see it’s as easy as the abc’s electrons end up at photosystem 1 but along the way they lost their excitement it went to energy for ADP (it ain’t free!)

ADP to ATP through a cooperation: photophosphorylation P 700 chlorophylls accept electrons then to the primary acceptor they are drawn redox reaction brings ‘em through another chain through ferredoxin electrons are given up to NADP+ who says ‘What’s Up?!’ With the help of NADP+ reductase, NADPH is made

ATP and NADPH goin’ to the dark reactions to help food be made Three phases of the calvin cycle to retain fixation, reduction, and regeneration on the brain we’ll follow three CO2 to make it into food It’s here in the stroma not in a pear or in a coma first phase is carbon fixation RuBP is its foundation CO2 attached to RuBP by rubisco not by fatty acids in Crisco this yields 2, 3-phosphoglycerates next phase reduction doesn’t rhyme with glycerate

ATP gives a phosphate group 3-biphosphoglycerate (whoop whoop) NADPH gives it electrons and reduces it to 6 molecules of G3P (ons) one exits that cycle for metabolic pathways the other 5 are recycles they don’t go away ‘cuz

Regeneration is the last part G3P recycled for RuBP man that’s smart 3 ATP used for 5 molecules what’s left is 3 RuBP don’t ridicule. Now ready to receive more CO2 the Calvin cycle can now continue!

“Photosynthesis”

It’s so important we need it to live we need it to breathe this you really gotta believe we need it to get our food so here’s an example to conclude cows eat the grass that grows using the photosynthesis flow we eat the cows when they get too big for their stalls and that’s how photosynthesis affects us all!

“Photosynthesis”
<img width='1' height='1' It is important that people everywhere understand that all of our food, either
directly or indirectly, comes from photosynthesis. We tried to include the
most basic crucial parts of the process to get across the point of the
complexity yet simplicity of the cycle. We tried to make the video fun for
viewers so they wouldn't be bored learning about such an important topic.

in case you need them:

LYRICS

The lonely leaf needs energy
or she'll get an allergy.
When she's sick she'll wilt and even turn brown
and then eventually fall to the ground.

Her energy comes mostly from the sun
but she works hard it's not just for fun.
Photosynthesis is the process of turning light into food
it's a really important reaction dude.

Green plants have chlorophyll
it captures sunlight, it's such a thrill
and that's why it's not called borophyll.
ATP and NADPH are generated when it's still bright
but then, mother nature turns out the light.
The Calvin Cycle runs through the dark
CO2 and ATP produce sugar, how smart!

When it's morning again the leaf starts working
NADPH and ADP lurking.
Soon enough electron transport changes that
NADP+ and ATP are made stat.

Extra Credit Project Guidelines

As much as the study of biology necessitates devotion to the observations of hard and soft science there is an inalienable aspect of creativity in the pursuit of any investigation, never mind science, as a potentially convoluted and fascinating study of life. The objectives of this activity are to facilitate an increased understanding and knowledge of some basic principles of the natural world, and to increase the appreciation and personal enjoyment of intellectual activity.

That being said, we hope to entice you, the student, to a creative investigation of the importance of Photosynthesis (as it relates to you, society, the life of a plant, life as a whole, evolution, etc…) culminating in an innovative project that can be turned into a short film between 3 and 5 minutes long. Content should be biologically accurate (encompassing available knowledge), and can be in any moving picture oriented form (i.e. scripted short film, animated music video (or an original piece of music to a photo montage), video montage (can include text), documentary, clay/ani mation, puppetry, or filmed deliberate social engagement (see the Yes Men). Feel free to go wild and be imaginative.

Requirements:
• The work is 100% original (in the sense that it is created by you and your group)
• The project is submitted in the form of a video presentation of 3-5 minutes
• Groups consist of 3-5 people
• You provide a list of your sources of information and inspiration, otherwise known as a “Works cited” or “References” in your credits

Please note that purely visual pieces will also require a short written statement (3 to 5 sentences) describing the intentions of the artists.

Formatting:
• Movies must be in .AVI, .MPEG, QuickTime, Real or Windows Media Player format
(uploading them to YouTube and providing us a URL is also encouraged, but a digital copy must be submitted)
• Pictures can be in jpg, gif, bmp, or png format

Grading/Grades:
• Credit will only be given to those students who have submitted ALL other required assignments
(i.e. This bonus project cannot take the place of a lab report or other lab assignments).
• Your grade will be based on reviews from your peers and your Professors and TAs with fifty percent (50%) of the grade from peer evaluations and 50% coming from the Professors and TA(s).
• The maximum point value for the project shall be 25 points (or 1/10 of your total lab grade).

Projects must be submitted electronically. We will provide details on how your work can be uploaded to this class blog by April 1, 2009, 11:59 pm. The class and instructors will review the projects and rate them accordingly. Grades will be posted by May 1st.

Note: Digital cameras are obtainable from UCTV in the Student Union, room 409.

Completed projects are due by April 1, 2009, 11:59pm.
